I started this blog in July 2006 as a great way to document my pregnancy and share information about the pending birth of our first child with our friends and family. Now that Tyler and his baby sister, Jenna, have arrived it serves to record the benchmarks and daily progress of their lives.

six weeks and sleeping
Oh I'm so spoiled! On the night that Jenna turned six weeks old, she slept 8 full hours. And again 8, 8.5 and 9 the next nights respectively. Alex teased me about my wanting to get Jenna on a routine, but I'm the one laughing now! Jenna still gets gas, but it is fewer and further between and we're also adjusting to better help her as her own body outgrows it as well. We've learned that she isn't as complacent as Tyler was with a dirty diaper and she also needs more frequent burping which has helped a great deal. She just ripped a big toot and smiled afterward. Not sure if that was relief or an early indication of her sense of humor. She smiles more and more each day. She is wearing size 1 diapers and her newborn clothes are now getting too small.

obama's house
Alex's nephew, Justin, and his girlfriend, Heather, came to stay with us for the week. Of course Tyler loved having an audience 24/7 and called Justin and Heather "his friends." He dragged them all over the place and coaxed them into taking him to the park many times.
We also headed to DC to take in the sites and serve as tour guides to our visitors. Tyler's favorite was seeing, in his words, "Obama's house," and the Air and Space museum. And Jenna was a pretty good sport about the long stroller ride.

one month

I can hardly believe that Jenna Marie is one month old today! She is such a good baby. Similar to Tyler, but slightly easier in that she had no trouble feeding from day one. She SMILED for the first time today in response to me talking to her. Smiles before only came as happy accidents or at the pleasure of having a full belly. She is definitely comforted by Mommy's voice.

wishful thinking
The Campbell family headed to Red Lobster for dinner. When my baked potato arrived with a mini scoop of butter on the side, all Tyler saw was ICE CREAM. He begged for a bite of "ice scream" and when our efforts to explain the contrary didn't register with him, we went ahead and let him do his own taste test. Tasting was finally believing. Disappointment!
weighing in
Jenna headed to the doctor today to get her one month checkup. The first question out of Dr. Tamayo's mouth when she entered the room was, "What have you been feeding this girl?" She had seen Jenna's stats and measurements. Jenna weighed in at 9 pounds, 4 ounces (56 percentile) and measured 22 inches in length (86 percentile). We have a very long, slender gal.

consistent six
Since she started, Jenna has maintained at least one six hour stint each night. Usually it is coupled with another four hour, sometimes five hour, stint.

hate gas
Poor Jenna. She is so happy and chill -- except for bouts of gas. She'll be totally calm and peaceful and all of a sudden I can see her lips curl into a pathetic frown, her eyelids redden and then she'll let out a desperate squeal of pain. My poor baby! We got some infants' Mylicon drops to use at each feeding which seem to have helped some.

train day
We headed to Historic Ellicott City to visit the B&O Railway Museum. Boy did we select the right place to go; Tyler LOVED it! He squealed with delight as the model trains moved along the set which was the length of the room. "I see it! I see it!" He also got to go in an actual boxcar. And of course, he wanted to drive!

6 hours
Jenna went six hours in between feedings last night -- back to back. Two feedings in a twelve hour period... I can dig it! But she is also becoming much more aware and curious during her waking hours. She is now awake much more during the day and loves to stare into lights and into mommy's eyes.
She held her head up the day she was born, but now is able to do it for longer spans and with more control. Although she has a long way to go still.

granny and gramps
Tyler and Jenna were treated to a visit from their Granny and Gramps from Florida. Tyler was a tad shy at first and then his personality popped out in no time. And it helped that Granny brought him a bunch of matchbox cars. The boy does love his cars! Tyler loved having more members to his audience and Jenna loved the cuddles with Granny.

2 o'clock
Everything for Tyler happens at 2 o'clock. He insists now that he goes to Ms. Debbie's at 2 o'clock. We should eat at 2 o'clock. His bedtime is, of course, 2 o'clock.
go getter
Tyler decided that he wanted some peach yogurt as a snack. Only trouble is that I was finishing up a phone conversation in the family room and had Jenna asleep on my lap. I asked him to be patient and I would assist him in a few minutes. I heard some noises but figured he was playing with his trucks.
As I entered the kitchen a few minutes later, I was both horrified and impressed with what Tyler had done. He slid the kitchen chair in front of the refrigerator, hopped up, opened the door, pulled out the fruit drawer and selected the particular yogurt he wanted. So proud of himself, he held out the yogurt for me to open so he could get started. Good for you Tyler (teeth clenched)!!

rough day
I'm blaming it all on the hormones. Or maybe it was that I knew Alex was having to leave town overnight for business. But I had some major anxiety about caring for both kids by myself for the first time. I was crying before he even left. Could this be my first bout of postpartum depression?
I called in some reinforcements and arranged for my brother Dylan and his girlfriend to come over to help entertain Tyler. Unfortunately they got delayed and prior to their arrival the Campbells were in poor shape. I was trying to feed Tyler and Jenna picked this period of time to need intense attention. I tried to put her in the swing. This didn't go well. It seemed to only make her wail harder. Then I made the mistake of using one of Tyler's favorite blankets for propping up Jenna since she is still too small for the swing. He was fine with this at first but then wanted to switch blankets midstream. When I said no, Tyler started to wail. With both kids screaming I resorted to joining in with sobs right in the middle of the family room floor. It wasn't until Tyler told me through tears that he was scared that I was able to pull it together.
To top it off, I was having extreme breast pain with that I believe was a clogged milk duct. So I was up at 3 a.m. searching the house for my breast pump to alleviate my discomfort. A new day, a new dawn. All was better (mommy, kids, and breast) within a day's time and Alex was home!
